A 19th century white metal mounted octagonal treen snuff box, inscribed on the reverse 'Respect me for what I have been, the time was when I was a young and hopeful plant of nature, in the course of years I became tall and the birds of air where happy under my shadow and returned the sweetest notes for my protection, by the hand of man I was cut down and stripped of natures robes and afterwards became a pillar in the Glasgow Cathedral, and for upwards of 600 years have assisted in supporting it as a refuge to Saint & Sinner from the stormy troubles of life, but now I am outcast from the House of God and have become a gazing stock in the hand of man and part of my remains made this snuff box 1824', the front face inscribed with the arms of Glasgow and inscribed 'Let Glasgow flourish' with rotating open and close action. 7.5cm diameter
