Post-Sale Report

Antiques & Fine Art Sale

To include: The selected contents of Rossie Priory, Inchture, Perthshire

26th & 27th April 2022

Our two day Antiques & Fine Art sale was the first that we have been able to allow bidders back into the room on the days of sale since the outbreak of Covid19. It was a pleasure to welcome bidders back into the saleroom as well as having a considerable number of bidders participating in the sale via our live bidding platform.

The 684 lot sale included the selected of contents of Rossie Priory, Inchture, Perthshire, a Private collection of Scottish Provincial Aberdeen silver and various other properties from throughout Scotland.

The furniture section of the sale included a fine George IV rosewood, brass and mosaic top table in the manner of Gillows, lot 5A. This proved to be one of the most popular lots in the sale due to its rarity, outstanding quality, good condition and market fresh credentials. As the lot was due to come under the hammer the buzz of the saleroom came to life as the team contacted the ten telephone bidders who registered their intent to buy the lot. The bidding was fierce between the telephone lines and the internet, but it was the internet bidder who secured the lot at £33,480. This was an exceptional price for a wonderful example of both 18th century Italian craftsmanship and early 19th century English cabinet making. The vendor was watching the live sale from the comfort of their home and could not quite believe it as the table had always just been in the lounge in the family home.

A group of Howard & Sons furniture, from the Rossie Priory consignment was always going to generate considerable interest, Lots 115 to 118. We have handled the sale of many Howard & Sons pieces in recent years and have gained a good reputation for achieving excellent prices for these much sought after pieces. The group from Rossie Priory included three armchairs and a sofa, all lotted individually one of the chairs, lot 116 sold for £7,440, and the sofa sold for £10,292. The four lots totalling £26,908.

The carpets and rug section of the sale included two lots from Rossie Priory that were always going to sell well. Lot 146, A late 19th century Kazak rug with it characteristic white ground and colourful stylised decoration was in particularly good condition. It was a nice size and had good commercial appeal. Bidding from both the telephones and internet saw the hammer come down at £9,300 (£11,530 including buyer’s premium). The second highest price in the sale was for lot 155, an extremely large Ushak carpet dating from the late 19th century. The colours, pattern and condition saw this climb quickly to final hammer price of £17,000 (£21,080 including buyer’s premium).

Other highlights included lot 164, a 17th century Italian bronze figure of a seated hound sold for £6,200. An Italian bronze cannon, lot 172, that sold for £6,690. A diamond solitaire ring, lot 448, that sold for £1,050. An 18ct gold ladies Rolex Oyster Perpetual wristwatch, lot 466, that sold for £4,960.
